G.R.A.T.I.T.U.D.E - A Quiet Turning Within

woman by the river

My niece once told me a story, simple on the surface, yet enduring in its quiet weight.

It was a rainy afternoon. She was waiting for a friend who had already been late for more than an hour beyond the promised time. What began as patience slowly dissolved.

Thought by thought, her mind opened itself to darker suggestions. The delay was no longer just time as it became a narrative. A story she told herself about being disregarded, unimportant, forgotten. “I was consumed by negative thoughts,” she admitted. “At that moment, I hated my friend.”

And yet, beneath that reaction was a truth she momentarily overlooked. Her friend had made an effort, an intentional detour in an already scheduled day to return a book that mattered to her. She had said, “This is important, so I’ll take another route to meet you first before going to my meeting.”

When my niece remembered this, something shifted. “It felt like water was poured over my head,” she said. A quiet awakening. By the time her friend arrived, she was no longer restless, but calm, and more than that, grateful.

Her friend approached her, slightly breathless, carrying both apology and humor.

“Embarrassing situation,” she said. “The sole of my shoe peeled off while I was running because it suddenly rained right after I got off the bus. Look! I had to walk from the side road with one shoe, the other foot barefoot.”

What appeared as lateness was, in truth, effort wrapped in inconvenience.

My niece confessed something deeper. While she waited, she felt an internal discomfort that had nothing to do with her friend’s delay. It was her own reaction that unsettled her.

I wanted to disappear from myself,” she said, not because her friend judged her, but because she became aware of her own thoughts. That awareness is the beginning of understanding.

Later, I found myself watching a group of children playing. They laughed without restraint, fully immersed in the present, unburdened by the invisible weight adults often carry. I wondered, even briefly, do they also harbor unkind thoughts toward one another?

Before the question could settle, one child said, “Thank you for today, see you again tomorrow.” Another ran toward her, embraced her without a word, and then ran off again, light, unguarded, complete. No overthinking. No residue. Just presence.

In that moment, something within me softened.

I remembered my niece’s story. I witnessed these children. And I felt an unmistakable shift to deeply grounding. Quietly, I spoke within myself:

Thank you for this moment.
Thank you for this day.
Thank you for the challenges I encountered though unresolved, I trust they will find their place.
Thank you for these children, who have shown me, without instruction, how life can be lived.

Gratitude, at that moment, was not an idea. It was a state.

G — God first
R — Respect for every living creation, whether perceived as good or bad
A — Attitude as the process shaped by one’s own thoughts
T — Temper, a reflection of that same attitude
I — Innate kindness, quietly residing within us
T — Trustworthiness, an asset carried by character
U — Understanding, a word that requires action to become real
D — Demeanor, the way we meet the world and its people
E — Ecstatic to greet life each morning

I came to realize that gratitude is not directed outward alone, it is, first, a relationship with oneself.

It begins with recognition. The ability to see one’s own emotions without denial, without distortion. To acknowledge what arises within, and to respond to it with awareness. To remain in that state requires intention. A quiet, continuous dialogue within the self, one that speaks in the language of appreciation. And something remarkable unfolds.

Uncertainty loosens its grip, mood swings lose their sharpness, negativity softens, and hurt begins to dissolve. Not because life has changed but simply because the one experiencing it has.

You may still stand in the same place, facing the same circumstances, carrying the same unresolved questions. Yet within that unchanged reality comes a quiet realization: you are not powerless inside it.

You are aware. And in that awareness, you are given a choice.

A choice over the thoughts you allow to enter.
A choice over the words you permit to take root.
A choice over what you will nurture… and what you will gently refuse.

Not every thought deserves your belief.
Not every emotion deserves your surrender.

Gratitude becomes the filter.
The steady hand that decides what stays and what passes through.

And in choosing carefully, consistently, and consciously, you begin to notice something profound:

It is not the situation that defines your inner world,
but the meaning you allow it to hold.

In that space of choice, you reclaim authorship of your own experience.
